On Monday, the Court of Appeals upheld the results of the February 25 election, declaring Senator Orji Uzor Kalu the victor in the Abia North Senatorial District.

Justice Abiri presided over the court that sustained the election petition tribunal’s decision in the case of the Abia State National Assembly.

Both the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Senator Mao Ohabunwa, and the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Nnamdi Iro Orji, have voiced their displeasure with the tribunal’s decision.

However, in a unanimous decision, the court found the appeal to be without merit.

They insisted that Senator Kalu had followed the letter of the law when it came to his candidacy. Both petitioners’ claims that the election wasn’t held in more than 120 polling units, mostly in Ohafia and Arochukwu local government areas of the zone, were rejected by the appeals court justices.

Kalu, a two-time lawmaker who presently presides as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation and Commercialisation was declared the winner of the fiercely contested February 25 senate polls, having scored 30,805 votes to defeat Nnamdi, who got 27,540 votes.
