A dispute between two prominent Northern businesspeople, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Abdussamad Rabiu of BUA Company, has prompted worry from the Northern Elders Forum (NEF).

NEF also expressed concern over the dispute between Bello Matawalle, the outgoing governor of Zamfara State, and Dauda Lawal, his successor.

The Convener of NEF, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, issued a statement saying that the development threatened the region’s economic and political stability.

Conflicts over cement prices between Aliko Dangote and Abdussamad Isiyaku Rabiu, and between Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State and Defense Minister Bello Mohammed Matawalle, are exacerbating the security and economic problems in the region, the statement said.

Because of this, NEF is urging all parties to the conflicts to show prudence for the sake of the region. We also urge northern authorities to step in and help broker peace talks between the warring factions. Zamfara’s two leaders, Lawal and Matawalle, must show moderation and maturity in the face of the state’s frightening insecurity by promoting a sense of togetherness and collaboration.
